The human body will respond to exercise regardless of how old it is. It is essential that as we age we continue to engage in physical activity to maintain our health. It only takes 30 mins of exercise per day to reap the benefits. So why is it so important?
- Disease prevention and pain management:
Exercise improves our immune system so that it’s better equipped to fight off and recover from disease or injury. It decreases the risk of developing Osteoporosis by increasing bone density and promotes joint flexibility and mobility to ease pain and discomfort. Regular physical activity increases muscle mass and fastens the metabolism. This enables us to stay within an appropriate weight range for our height and stature to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
-
Improved Mental Health
Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins – the ‘feel good’ hormone – and helps regulate our circadian rhythm for better sleep. -
Decreased Risk of Falls
Falls are the most common injury among seniors and not only cause health complications but can impact on our independence and self-confidence. Exercise increases strength, balance, coordination and flexibility to minimise the risk of falls. -
Social Engagement
Often as we age we experience feelings of loneliness and may feel like we have lost our sense of purpose. Exercise can be used as a social opportunity to connect you with likeminded people who share the interest of improving and maintaining their health! It keeps you motivated to stay committed to your goals and work harder during your session.
Improved Cognitive Function and memory.
Studies indicate that regular exercise reduces the risk of dementia by prompting the brain to maintain old neural connections as well as establish new ones.
